DG-SoH: About Coren

Some OOC discussion about Coren that I wasn't sure where to put. So I'm putting it here.
A lot of what you've seen recently explains why Coren doesn't really have any friends. Only the kindhearted Li-eira is able to put up with Coren's grumpiness, his anger, his bouts of depression, his drinking, his snoring and his terrible singing voice. The damage that was done in his early life has led him onto a road to darkness that sometimes (often?) peeks through.
Which leads us to Coren's nightmare and his first prophecy.
Since killing the polar bear, Coren has dreamt of a big, black serpent attacking and devouring him (I suspect this is Beldrem trying to get back at Coren for killing one of his creatures :-) ). The Oracle has told Coren that only with the help of his animal companions, the hawk, the wolf and the rest, will Coren defeat this serpent. Together they might win but apart he'll definitely fail.
Originally, Coren assumed the serpent represented the Dragonlords, which makes a certain kind of sense. They're his nemesis and they ride serpents of a sort. However since joining with the others, the threat has expanded somewhat. Perhaps the serpent represents the Race war, or the many minions of Arluth-Traugur, or the Bright One himself?
Actually, the prophecy is simpler and more personal than that. The black serpent represents the darkness within Coren's soul or personality. It's his anger, his loneliness, his prejudice and all the bad things he is and the crap that he does.
Thus the prophecy is directed solely at Coren. With help from his friends, he'll drive back that darkness. With these companions around him, he'll see the good in people and that might help him become a better person. The prophecy is not about saving a country or the world, it's about saving a single soul.
Of course, if he leaves the companions then he's doomed. Let's hope that doesn't happen, eh? ;-)

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
Oh nice!!!
I really love the way you have taken that prophecy and internalized it for him. You have added more layers than I had originally seen from the character.
Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
My knowledge in the field tells me both are correct, and necessarily so. The darkness within Coren mirrors the darkness in the world and both must be defeated if all the good things about us (and the world) are to thrive.
My experience in the field suggests that the only way to defeat the world's evil is to confront and master the evil on one's own soul -- always the harder task of the two. :)
Nice work, Nimbus, as always. Makes me sorry Ya* is at such an intolerant stage in her life, but I suspect Aislinn will be MORE than adequate to the task. :)

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
LOL! Yeah, despite her occasional flare-ups of temper (which aren't often), Aislinn is a pretty accepting and forgiving soul. That's definitely going to be put to the test, here. I know it, because I've known Paragon for years... :)
Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
HEY!!! I resemble that remark. :D
Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
Yeah, the prophecy probably applies to all levels - from individuals to whole nations, from outer threats to inner demons. It's amazing how something I cobbled together in about ten minutes from some bits of David Eddings' Belgariad (sp?) can be so all-encompassing. :)

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
As a player, Coren has been one of my favorite characters in this story, for the reasons you mentioned above. The dark spots that tend to hide and cover the good underneath. Ive found it to be well done, and compelling writing. I know that I wish I could have Janus be as deep and rich a character as that.

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
Thanks for that! I'm having a lot of fun playing Coren and that really helps.
I love everyone's character in this game (although I haven't seen much of Giacomo yet to really comment on him - though he does seem to capture the whole bard thing rather well). And everyone in it is a great roleplayer. I'm just very thankful that I'm in this game.

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
Thanks for writing this.
I enjoyed reading it and I really like your take on it. You make Coren very vivid in my mind the way you play him.
...and as a reader, I have so much sympathy for him.
Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
And without Li-eira, Coren wouldn't be half the character he is at the moment.

Re: DG-SoH: About Coren
...aw...shucks. :)
That's sweet.
